A consultation label is not a product advertising exemption
TGA guidance treats direct and indirect references to prescription medicines as relevant to public advertising restrictions. That includes class descriptions and an overall presentation that promotes access to a product. Many products in this sector are unapproved goods; a prescription, pharmacy supply or clinic consultation does not turn them into TGA-approved products. Avoid claims about product quality, purity, safety or effectiveness.
Clinic websites, blogs and social content can all be advertising. An educational disclaimer does not create a separate set of rules. Pages organised around performance, anti-ageing or recovery goals can still promote a restricted product through their context. We do not recommend a collection of goal pages that leads people to a medicine-focused booking menu.
How we would organise the search content
We audit the site before proposing new articles, reviewing page titles, headings, product references, booking menus and internal links for direct or indirect medicine promotion. A page labelled educational can still promote goods when it sits within a clinic's sales pathway.
Where a genuine broader service exists, organise factual content around practitioner credentials, appointment process, telehealth arrangements and ongoing care. Every page must describe actual services, with clinical review and a clear purpose for the reader. Do not build a cluster of performance, recovery and anti-ageing pages that all funnel to the same restricted offer. If the business presentation itself creates the issue, identify that for the clinic rather than promise that SEO can work around it.
Search themes and the pages that should answer them
- clinic information
- medical practitioner credentials
- consultation process
- telehealth appointment information
- medical follow-up process
- practice location and contact
We tailor these ideas to your services, audience and advertising requirements.
What should stay out of the content plan
Do not target named peptides, medicine classes, supply, dosage, performance promises or product comparisons. A generic keyword is not a safe substitute when the page context still promotes restricted goods.
What the landing page needs to answer
Provide accurate practitioner and service information with a clear medical assessment pathway. Keep informational content and linked booking pages consistent. Do not describe products as approved, pure or effective, and do not use a disclaimer to excuse a promotional claim.
Describe only genuine medical services
Where the clinic provides a broader medical assessment service, explain the practitioner's credentials, what a consultation involves and how follow-up is arranged, without promising a prescription. Pathology and monitoring content must describe actual care rather than operate as coded product promotion. If the service cannot be described honestly without advertising restricted goods, promotion through search or ads may not be suitable.
Keep assessment answers, pathology, medicines and clinical notes in a secure clinical system. A marketing report can record aggregate enquiry and appointment counts without passing sensitive information to an advertising platform. A platform's inability to measure a conversion does not justify sending it health data.
Scope the work around useful pages and actual demand
We scope the existing content, local presence, service coverage and technical work required. We prioritise pages for services with capacity rather than a fixed number of articles each month. The work is tailored to your services, locations and current website.
Advertising and communication boundaries
TGA restrictions, Ahpra advertising requirements for the medical service and platform healthcare rules must all be satisfied. Do not use product names, class-led consumer offers, prescribing guarantees or an editorial loophole. The whole destination, including its business presentation and linked pages, needs review. Legal suitability and platform eligibility are separate questions.
A factual description of a genuine general medical assessment may be a starting point for review. "Book an anti-ageing peptide consultation" is not made acceptable by adding "subject to medical approval". Context matters, and the campaign may need to remain paused.
Local accuracy and useful content before page volume
We make sure the site, local listings and practitioner information describe the same real service. A location page should contain something useful about that location, not a substituted suburb name. Link important service pages from the navigation and relevant articles so readers can reach them without guessing where they belong. Keep required disclosures and funding information visible.
We review content with the person responsible for each service and agree who updates staff, hours and availability. We report search visibility and enquiries separately, so you can see whether more people are finding the service and contacting your team.
How we would judge the work
Review visibility for legitimate clinic and service information alongside appropriate enquiries. Keep clinical outcomes internal and do not count product-search traffic as a commercial success when the underlying content should not promote those products.
Five mistakes to check in an audit
- SEO treated as outside advertising law. A clinic blog that promotes restricted goods can still be advertising, even when no ad spend is involved.
- Goal pages lead to product bookings. Removing a product name from the page title does not change a medicine-led offer in the body or booking flow.
- Pharmacy supply used as a quality claim. Do not imply approval, purity or effectiveness from the dispensing pathway.
- Policy rejection leads to disguised wording. Do not cloak destinations, alter spelling or use euphemisms to evade review. Reassess whether the service can be advertised.
- Unrelated clinic CPLs used to sell the channel. Another specialty's lead cost is not an expected result for this sector.
